3 surprising cycling destinations for reimagining winter

There’s a season when India, Vietnam and Egypt are at their very best, and it falls smack-dab in the middle of winter back home. From roughly November to March, these countries trade extreme heat for warm sunshine, comfortable temperatures and days rich with culture, flavor and discovery. Whatever weather sits outside your window, this is the time to get packing.

Our winter journeys are a little different from our classic European bike and boat tours, and that’s intentional. They’re longer, and they combine the best of two worlds: carefully chosen hotel stays and comfortable nights aboard ship. The mix of bike and boat lets you reach the most famous sights as well as the off-the-beaten-road surprises that a boat alone could never reach. Best of all, there’s time: time to settle in, to ease into the climate and culture, and to really get to know each destination instead of rushing through it.

When travel opens up your world

Laurens Winkel, founder of Boat Bike Tours, says it best:

“When we created our winter journeys, one thing mattered most to us: we wanted to give our guests the time to truly get to know a country, not just visit it. Interestingly, guests tend to ask us the same questions before their first winter trip. Isn’t India overwhelming? Can I really enjoy the food in Vietnam? Isn’t Egypt far too hot in winter? I understand every one of those questions. But that early hesitation almost always turns into wonder within the first few days. And by the end of the trip, one question keeps coming up: why didn’t we do this sooner? Those are my favorite moments, because they show that travel opens up your world, and that some of the most unforgettable experiences are waiting exactly where you least expect them.”

From colorful India to laid-back Vietnam to history-soaked Egypt, each of these destinations tells its own story. Which one will you experience?

India: A country that awakens every sense

There are countries you visit, and there are countries that change you. India is the latter.

India doesn’t greet you quietly. Colors, scents, honking rickshaws, temple music and bustling markets seem to rush at you all at once. The relentless energy of its streets only adds to that first impression.

But you quickly discover that there’s a steady pulse to the energy, showing an underlying system that works beautifully. And while India isn’t a classic cycling destination, it’s a wonderful one to explore by bike. Our mostly flat routes follow quiet back roads through small villages and farmland. Away from the big-city traffic, the country opens up around you and welcomes you in.

Yes, you’ll stand before the Taj Mahal, wander the grand palaces once inhabited by the maharajas and lose yourself in vivid bazaars. Those iconic moments won’t be missed. But the real magic of India lives in between them: a cup of chai handed to you at a roadside stall, children racing alongside your bike, the hush of Kerala’s backwaters at dusk. The famous sights draw you in; the small encounters are what stay with you.

India surprises at the table, too. Alongside fragrant curries, you’ll find fresh-baked naan, creamy lentil dishes and an astonishing variety of vegetarian specialties.

And while the folks back home are bundling up to ward off the cold, much of India is enjoying sunny days and pleasant temperatures: exactly right for easy rides and unhurried discovery.

After just a few days, a transformation tends to happen: uncertainty turns into fascination, and skepticism turns into delight. India changes travelers; will it change you?

Vietnam: The art of taking life slowly

Vietnam doesn’t win you over with one grand highlight: it wins you over with countless small moments you’ll never forget.

Vietnam feels far calmer than India at first, and yet it surprises you in its own quiet way. If you’ve ever seen photos of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, you probably picture endless streams of mopeds. That chaotic traffic is real, and it’s honestly half the charm. But just a few miles beyond the city, a completely different world begins.

Our routes wind through a lush, green landscape of rice paddies, tiny villages, and fruit orchards, following peaceful river branches along the way. Out here, the day moves to a soothing rhythm of water buffalo, fishing boats and children waving as you roll past.

From the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay to the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An to endless jade-green rice fields, Vietnam offers a stunning range of landscapes and cultures. Those very contrasts are what make it so captivating: the famous bay for the photographs, the quiet village lane for the memories.

Vietnam is an adventure in cuisine, too. Fragrant herbs, light broths, fresh vegetables and beautifully prepared meat and fish dishes make Vietnamese cuisine one of the most beloved in all of Asia.

And though Vietnam feels wonderfully exotic, settling in comes easily. People welcome visitors with genuine warmth, a smile opens almost any door and our tour leaders make the little cultural details feel natural from day one.

While it’s winter at home, here you’ll spend your days on sunny rides through tropical scenery, wrapped in an easygoing way of life that’s surprisingly contagious.

Egypt: More than the Nile and the desert

Say Egypt and most people picture endless sand and blazing summer sun. Yet it’s precisely during the colder months back home that the country shows its most inviting side. Comfortably mild temperatures make temple visits, walks and bike rides an absolute pleasure.

Naturally, Egypt raises plenty of questions, and that’s exactly why we put so much effort into planning our routes. Working with experienced local partners, we travel only on well-tested routes that are both safe and spectacular. Whether it’s the monumental temples of Luxor and Karnak, the Valley of the Kings or small Nubian villages along the Nile, few places on earth make history feel this alive.

When it comes to food, come hungry and come curious. Warm flatbreads, mezze spreads, grilled vegetables, and freshly caught fish are the delicious companions of a journey along the Nile.

And the moment you see the sun slowly sink behind the palm trees from the deck of your comfortable Nile cruiser, you’ll understand why so many guests say the same thing: “This isn’t the Egypt I imagined.”

Why explore by bike?

On a bike, you don’t see India, Vietnam and Egypt through a tour-bus window; you’re right in the middle of local life. You stop on a whim at a little market, breathe in the intoxicating aroma of spices, strike up a conversation with a passerby, hear temple bells or the call to prayer, and find places that big tour groups never reach.

In short, you live the difference between merely seeing and truly experiencing a place. Landmarks become encounters; landscapes become memories. And every evening, your ship or comfortable hotel is waiting to offer you rest, a good meal and the ease of never having to pack and repack. This blend of gentle activity and genuine comfort is what our winter journeys are all about.

Every journey begins in the mind

Every journey begins long before the first flight. It starts with an idea, curiosity, and sometimes, a little doubt. Those small uncertainties are part of traveling, too. After all, stepping outside your comfort zone to discover something new is exactly where the real magic of travel lives.

Anyone who says yes to India, Vietnam or Egypt tends to return with far more than beautiful photos. Whether it’s the smell of spices in India, that welcoming smile from a local in Vietnam or simply the mysterious beauty of a sunset over the Nile, it’s the small moments that stay with you long after you’re home.

As Laurens Winkel likes to say: “Maybe the most beautiful winter isn’t found where the snow falls, but where you have the courage to let yourself be surprised.”
