Over the years, she has taken several Boat Bike Tours together with her husband and their three children, experiencing firsthand how active travel by bike and boat can work for families. This particular trip, however, was different. Offered by Islandhopping, a brand of Boat Bike Tours, it combined cycling with swimming, sailing, and special activities, and turned out to be a rare experience that genuinely made every member of her family happy, each in their own way. Here’s Judith’s account of the trip:

Crystal-clear water, charming harbor towns, and bike rides through stunning island scenery: this family adventure in Croatia brought together everything we love about traveling actively, with something extra. During our week aboard the San Snova, we discovered a different island almost every day, from lively Hvar to tranquil Vis and historic Trogir. What made this journey stand out was not just the destinations, but the way cycling, swimming, sailing, and shared time onboard came together so naturally that every member of our family, adults and children alike, felt completely at ease.

Sailing from island to island across the clear blue Adriatic already felt like a vacation in itself. Each day brought a new landscape, with opportunities to explore both actively and at a comfortable pace. Some mornings we cycled uphill to panoramic viewpoints on Hvar and Vis, rewarded with sweeping views over vineyards, olive groves, and the sea. On other days, strolling through historic towns was just as memorable.
Split and Trogir, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, were highlights, with their narrow streets and lively waterfronts inviting us to explore at our own pace. Cycling through the UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain was another special moment, passing vineyards and olive trees that have been cultivated in the same way for centuries.
What made these days work so well for our group was the flexibility. Those who wanted a more active ride could do so, while others chose shorter routes or took more time to enjoy the scenery. No one ever felt rushed, and no one felt like they were holding the group back. It was reassuring to know that every day offered choices, whether that meant cycling more, taking it easy, or simply enjoying time onboard.

Swimming quickly became a daily ritual. Almost every day included at least one swim stop in astonishingly clear water, a moment everyone looked forward to, regardless of age.
In addition, a few special activities added variety to the week. One day, we headed inland for a guided rafting excursion on a river. It was adventurous without being overwhelming, and the shared excitement made it one of the most talked-about days of the trip.
On the final cycling day, we visited a local beekeeper. Hearing about traditional beekeeping and tasting fresh honey was a quieter but equally memorable experience. It was a wonderful example of how cultural encounters and light activity can be combined in a way that appeals to all generations.

What truly made this trip special was the sense of togetherness that developed onboard. There was no fixed seating during meals, which may seem like a small detail, but it made a big difference. People sat wherever they liked, conversations flowed easily, and the group quickly felt connected.
The children, ranging in age from 10 to 19, found each other almost immediately. They explored local markets together, went to an open-air cinema, jumped into the sea from the top deck, and spent hours on SUPs or floating cushions. It was striking how naturally they bonded, despite different nationalities and languages.
The adults gravitated toward each other just as easily: enjoying a drink at a harbor café, playing board games on deck, or simply talking while watching the coastline drift by. The international mix with guests from Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands added to the atmosphere. English quickly became the shared language, and even the children picked up a few words of German along the way.

The tour leaders played a key role in creating this atmosphere. They were genuinely engaged, especially with the children, and their enthusiasm set the tone for the entire trip. Whether joining games during swim stops, encouraging hesitant rafters, or simply being present and approachable, they helped everyone feel comfortable and included.
Their approach made the adventure feel safe and well-organized, while still leaving room for spontaneity and fun: an important balance when traveling as a family.

Throughout the week, the San Snova truly felt like a home on the water. The wooden ship has warmth and character, with cozy cabins and inviting deck spaces where we could relax between activities. Life onboard quickly settled into a pleasant rhythm: breakfast together, a day of exploration, and evenings spent dining and unwinding as a group.
Meals were another highlight. From generous breakfasts to multi-course dinners, everything was prepared with care and attention, making shared meals something to look forward to each day.

A large part of our enjoyment came from the crew. Captain Frano, better known as Žuti, navigated us smoothly from island to island, always knowing the most beautiful anchorages. Sailors Mario and Frane were constantly on hand, while chef Luka and sous-chef Sara surprised us daily with delicious dishes. Andro’s friendly and attentive service completed the experience.
What stood out most was how well the crew worked together and how personally involved they were with the guests. Their professionalism and warmth created an atmosphere of trust and ease, allowing everyone to fully relax and enjoy the journey.

After a week of sailing, cycling, swimming, and exploring, saying goodbye was not easy. The islands and historic towns were unforgettable, but it was the atmosphere onboard, the flexibility of the program, and the genuine connections between guests that made this trip so special.
In my view, this kind of multi-adventure cruise is especially suited to families who enjoy being active at their own pace, value comfort and good organization, and want to spend meaningful time together, without having to plan every detail themselves.
