Discover our limited seasonal offers and travel Europe at its most beautiful
Find your tourWhen people think about sustainable travel, they often think of nature, climate, and the choices we make to reduce our impact on the places we visit. And rightly so. But for us, sustainability is also about people.
It is about creating meaningful connections. It is about supporting communities. And it is about making sure that the positive impact of travel reaches further than the journey itself.
At Boat Bike Tours, connection has always been at the heart of what we do. Our guests may step on board as solo travelers, couples, families, or friends, but something special often happens along the way. During a day of cycling, conversations begin naturally. At dinner, stories are shared around the table. By the end of the trip, many guests leave not just with beautiful memories of Europe’s rivers, villages, cities, and landscapes, but also with new friendships.
That sense of togetherness is one of the things our guests value most. It is also something we want to share beyond our tours.

We are very aware that not everyone has the opportunity to book a trip with us. Travel can bring people together, but meaningful connection should not depend on taking a vacation.
That is why we want to make a lasting positive impact in our own community, especially in Amsterdam-Noord, where our office is located. This part of the city is our home base, and we feel a responsibility to be more than just a company that operates from here. We want to be involved, supportive, and connected.
One theme that is especially close to our hearts is loneliness. It can affect people of all ages, but many older adults are particularly vulnerable to social isolation. A conversation, a shared meal, a familiar song, or a day out on the water can make a real difference.
This October, we will once again offer a sailing day for seniors. It is a simple idea, but a meaningful one: bringing people together for a relaxing day on the water, with time to talk, enjoy the view, and feel part of a group.
We also support an organization that hosts musical afternoons for older adults in Amsterdam. Music has a powerful way of opening memories, creating joy, and helping people connect with one another. These afternoons offer much more than entertainment. They create moments of recognition, warmth, and belonging.

Our commitment to connection also led us to join the Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond, a network that works toward a livable city for everyone. Through this partnership, we are part of a wider movement of organizations and people who care about the future of Amsterdam and the wellbeing of its residents.
For us, this is an important part of sustainability. A sustainable city is not only clean, green, and accessible. It is also a place where people feel seen, included, and supported.

We also look for practical ways to reduce waste and support people at the same time. Our written-off laptops and rental bikes are not simply discarded when they are no longer needed in our daily operations. Whenever possible, they are given a second life with people or organizations that can use them well.
A laptop can help someone study, communicate, or take a step toward work. A bike can offer freedom, mobility, and independence. By reusing materials in this way, we reduce waste while also creating social value.

In addition to our local initiatives, we support organizations and projects that align with our values.
One example is the German initiative “Menschen für Kinder”. In April, a group of seriously ill young people were able to enjoy a week-long sailing trip on board the Wapen fan Fryslan. We were proud to contribute financially to an experience that offered these young people time away, fresh air, and moments of joy.
We also support the Vrienden van Veerponten and the ferry Groene Stroomboot. Small ferry connections are important for cyclists, pedestrians, and local communities. They keep people moving, make sustainable transportation easier, and help preserve the charm and accessibility of the places we love.

For us, sustainability is not one single action. It is a mindset. It shapes how we design our tours, how we welcome our guests, how we work with partners, and how we contribute to the world around us.
On board, we see again and again how powerful connection can be. People who have never met before share routes, meals, stories, and laughter. They discover new places together and return home with memories that last.
We believe that same spirit of connection can also create positive change closer to home.
Whether it is a senior enjoying a day on the water, a musical afternoon that brings people together, a bike finding a new owner, or a ferry continuing to serve its community, each initiative is part of a larger idea: travel should leave something good behind.
For our guests. For our communities. And for the places we call home.
