Turning fuel data into real sustainable change on the water

Boat Bike Tours’ Energy Monitoring Project started with a simple question: how can we reduce fuel use if we cannot see exactly where it happens?

What began as a pilot to track onboard fuel consumption has now grown into a fully implemented system across the Dutch fleet. By installing fuel meters and collecting real time data, captains and crews can better understand how daily sailing decisions affect energy use, emissions, and overall efficiency.

Practical climate action in tourism

Boat Bike Tours recently shared this progress at the Cross-Re-Tour Show and Share event in Malta, where partners and participants came together to exchange experiences and showcase the results of projects supported through the programme. It was a valuable opportunity to learn from other tourism SMEs and show how digital tools can support practical climate action in tourism.

With clearer data now available across the fleet, Boat Bike Tours can make more informed operational decisions, improve reporting, and increase transparency toward guests and partners. Most importantly, the project shows how visibility can lead to action, helping turn sustainability goals into measurable progress.
