Traveling from Lyon to Arles (or the other way around), you follow one of France’s great rivers through a region shaped by centuries of trade, winemaking, art and history. Each day offers a new perspective: cycling along parts of the well-developed ViaRhôna, passing vineyards and hilltop villages, visiting remarkable heritage sites or relaxing on board the comfortable MS Provence as the scenery unfolds from the water.
The route is rich in memorable places. Lyon is known as France’s capital of gastronomy, while Avignon recalls its medieval importance with the impressive Palais des Papes. The Pont du Gard, one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in Europe, is a true highlight of the journey. In Arles, Roman monuments and Van Gogh connections create a powerful sense of place. Along the way, you also discover famous wine areas such as Saint-Joseph, Condrieu and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as the chocolate traditions of Valrhona.
This is Southern France at an enjoyable pace. Some days offer a choice between a more relaxed ride and a sportier route, while on selected more challenging stages a support vehicle accompanies the group. Your ship follows along the river, giving you a comfortable home base throughout the week. The result is a well-balanced journey with active days, cultural discoveries, regional flavors and plenty of time to savor the Provençal way of life.
The ship: your floating hotel
Between cycling days, the MS Provence brings you comfortably from one destination to the next. Each day, a new town or landscape awaits, while your cabin, meals and familiar crew travel with you.
On board, you enjoy the relaxed rhythm of river cruising: breakfast before the ride, dinner after an active day and time to unwind on deck as the Rhône landscapes pass by. Packed lunches are prepared from the onboard buffet or lunch is served on board, depending on the day’s program. Full board is included during the cruise, except for one dinner on your own in Avignon — a perfect opportunity to explore the city’s lively restaurant scene.
Prefer a slower day? You are welcome to stay on board while the ship sails to the next destination.
Guided cycling with flexibility
The daily e-bike only tours are guided by knowledgeable, English-speaking tour leaders. Guests cycle in guided groups, with a maximum of 16 guests per guide.
The cycling level ranges from 2 to 4, with more relaxed routes on selected days and more advanced options for guests who prefer longer or hillier rides. Digital routes via RideGPS are also provided, together with cycling maps.
On selected cycling days, a support van accompanies the group, offering extra peace of mind when the terrain becomes more demanding.
Welcome to Lyon, France’s famous capital of food and gastronomy, and the starting point of your Rhône Valley journey. After boarding the MS Provence, settle into your cabin and enjoy a welcome drink on board.
The crew and tour leaders introduce the ship, the cycling program and the highlights of the week ahead. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to join a short practice ride and get comfortable with your bike. During your first dinner on board, look forward to a varied week of wine regions, historic cities, Rhône landscapes and Provençal charm.

After lunch, your first ride begins in the small wine-growing village of Chavanay. The route follows the ViaRhôna south along the Rhône through riverside villages and peaceful landscapes. You cycle via Sablons and Serrières to Andance, known for one of the oldest suspension bridges across the Rhône.
The route then turns inland through vineyard roads toward Saint-Désirat, where there may be an opportunity for a Côtes du Rhône wine tasting near the end of the ride or at a similar suitable location. In the late afternoon, you arrive in Tournon-sur-Rhône, where your ship is waiting.
Today offers a choice between a relaxed riverside ride along the Rhône (28-31 mi.) and a more adventurous route through the Ardèche countryside (43-47 mi.).

The advanced route begins with a ride on the historic Train de l’Ardèche to Lamastre, subject to train availability and confirmation. From there, you follow the beautiful La Dolce Via greenway through the Eyrieux Valley, cycling along a former railway line with gentle gradients, tunnels, viaducts, forests and river scenery.
Both cycling groups rejoin the ship in La Voulte-sur-Rhône. In the evening, the MS Provence continues south, to Viviers.

You then continue through the celebrated vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where an optional wine tasting or wine-and-chocolate pairing may provide a fitting finale to the day before you rejoin the ship. The MS Provence welcomes you back on board and continues to Avignon for the evening.

The route first follows the ViaRhôna out of the city, then continues along small country roads through orchards, canals and villages around Sorgues and Entraigues-sur-la-Sorgue.
A relaxed café stop along the way adds a classic touch of Provençal life before returning to Avignon in the late afternoon. The evening is free, giving you the perfect chance to discover the city’s restaurants and atmospheric old town.

In the afternoon, the route continues mostly on easy, flat roads through the Rhône countryside toward Beaucaire and Tarascon. Dinner is served on board this evening as the ship remains overnight in Tarascon.
On the final cycling day, you can choose between a relaxed ride along the Rhône and a more challenging route through the landscapes of the Alpilles.

Guests can travel between Arles and Lyon in either direction by train and may bring an e-bike on board.
Option 1: Regional TER Trains (Recommended)

Travel time is approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on the connection.
For train schedules, fares, and ticket bookings, please visit: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en
Option 2: High-Speed TGV INOUI Trains

For train schedules, fares, and ticket bookings, please visit: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en
Our Recommendation
For the most convenient and flexible journey with an e-bike, we recommend traveling by TER train. No reservation for your e-bike is required, and these trains typically offer more space for bikes than high-speed services. During busy holiday periods, e-bike spaces may fill up quickly, so traveling outside peak hours is recommended whenever possible.
