More than just a job
Hugo’s journey started back in 2000, when he responded to a newspaper ad. What began as a fun side gig turned into a career … and a lifestyle. “I thought I’d try it for two weeks,” Hugo says. “Now, I’ve guided more than 500 tours. I never expected I’d stay this long.”
From his early days with small group tours on traditional ships to today’s mix of luxury vessels and e-bike options, Hugo has seen it all. “The concept has evolved a lot,” he reflects, “but the heart of the experience – the connections between people – has stayed the same.”
Biking: the ultimate immersive experience
Why bike and boat? For Hugo, the answer is simple: “Cycling brings you into direct contact with your surroundings. You’re not behind glass. You feel the wind, smell the flowers, and see every detail.” Paired with the comfort of a floating hotel, it’s the perfect way to travel without the stress of packing and unpacking every day.

The social magic of group travel
But what really sets Boat Bike Tours apart is the human connection. Hugo loves seeing strangers become friends. “There’s always a moment when the group clicks. We share stories, laugh together, and yes, sometimes we even sing!”
Over the years, Hugo has guided guests from the US, Canada, Germany, Brazil, and beyond. Each nationality brings its own perspective … and its own set of cycling habits. “You have to adapt as a guide,” he says. “Some guests are experienced cyclists. Others are riding an e-bike for the first time.”

Highlights and heartfelt memories
Hugo smiles as he shares one of his most special memories: “I actually met the mother of my child on a tour. This work didn’t just bring me joy. It brought me love.”
He also creates daily videos of his groups, capturing their progress and smiles along the way. “Guests love watching them at the end of the week. It brings the whole journey full circle.”
