Behind the scenes with Esther and Jossie
What makes a Boat Bike Tour truly unforgettable? It’s not just the stunning landscapes, the smooth sailing, or the carefully-planned routes. It’s the people. In this episode of our podcast, host Ennie sits down with two remarkable team members: Esther Nouse, a dedicated tour leader, and Jossie Verkerk, a pioneer in sustainability and a long-time part of the Boat Bike Tours family.
Together, they share what it’s really like to guide guests through Europe by bike and aboard a ship, and how every tour becomes a story of connection, discovery, and shared adventure.
A job beyond just leading a tour
For Esther, being a tour leader isn’t just about cycling from point A to B. It’s about building bridges. Between cultures, languages, and people. Whether leading a group through the quiet countryside of the Hanseatic Route, cycling past tulip fields in Holland, or navigating cobbled streets in Belgium, she loves seeing strangers become friends.
“One of the best moments,” Esther shares, “is when guests from all over the world start to connect. In the beginning, they might sit with those who speak the same language, but by the end of the week, they’re laughing and sharing stories like old friends.”
The art of the “corner system” (and a bit of rain)
Esther also reveals a little insider secret: the “corner system.” This simple technique keeps groups together, encourages teamwork, and helps break the ice among guests. Everyone takes turns guiding the group at intersections, ensuring no one misses where they need to turn, and everyone gets a chance to chat with different people along the way.
Of course, not every day is perfect sunshine. As Jossie laughs, “In the Netherlands, it rains a lot. Sometimes, you just have to go with the flow … and maybe learn when not to panic about a little drizzle!” It’s all part of the adventure!
Beyond the bike: Sustainability and connection
Jossie, who has been with Boat Bike Tours for over 30 years, brings a unique perspective. As a former captain, shipbuilder, and now a sustainability advocate, she’s seen the industry evolve. Today, she leads the Greenway Foundation, an initiative that reinvests part of each booking into making the fleet more eco-friendly.
“Our goal is to keep exploring the world – but with a lighter footprint,” Jossie says. “It’s about innovation, but also about care – for our guests, our crews, and the environment.”
A journey of cultures and stories
Every guest brings a unique story. Some come to discover the landscapes; others seek a connection to their family history. Tour leaders like Esther see it all: guests tracing their ancestors’ roots, marveling at cows in Dutch meadows, or learning about the excellent cycling systems in the Netherlands.
It’s these stories – big and small – that make a Boat Bike Tour so much more than a vacation.
