Behind the scenes on the De Willemstad
What makes a Boat Bike Tour truly special? Beyond the scenic bike paths and charming towns, it’s the people at the helm. In this episode of our podcast, host Ennie meets with skipper Michael van den Heuvel, the man guiding the De Willemstad across Dutch waters.
Michael shares stories from 26 years of sailing and gives us a peek into the everyday magic (and occasional mishaps!) that happen on board.
A floating hotel – with personality
For Michael, being a skipper is much more than steering a ship. “It’s about creating a smooth and welcoming experience for every guest,” he says. From organizing crew shifts to fixing bikes and sometimes even picking up stranded cyclists on his scooter – no two days are the same.
“People often don’t realize how much happens behind the scenes,” he adds. “But when guests smile at the end of the week, you know it’s all worth it.”
Tandems in cabins and dancing on deck
The fun doesn’t stop there. On Wednesday evenings, the De Willemstad turns into a floating dance floor, with live music and plenty of good vibes. “I don’t drink on the job, but I’ll definitely join guests for a lemonade and a dance,” Michael grins.
The Hanseatic Route: a skipper’s favorite
When asked to choose a favorite route, Michael doesn’t hesitate. “The Hanseatic Tour is my top pick. It’s peaceful, full of nature, and packed with history.” Plus, it includes a stop in his hometown, the charming fishing village of Harderwijk.
“It’s the perfect way for guests to discover the Dutch countryside—without the crowds of the big cities.”
A relaxed way to explore, your way
Whether guests bring their own bikes (yes, even tandems!) or rent an e-bike on board, Michael ensures every ride is smooth. And with the freedom of unguided tours, guests can explore each town at their own pace, supported by daily briefings, route maps, and the Boat Bike app.
There’s even a “toilet app” tip for those wondering about rest stops along the way!
From the bridge to the bike path
Every Boat Bike Tour is shaped by its people—both guests and crew. For Michael, it’s all about care, creativity, and a sense of adventure. “You meet guests from all over the world, help them feel safe and relaxed, and sometimes even become part of their stories.”
