Guests on Boat Bike Tours can be solo travelers, couples, groups of friends, or family groups. Our colleague Coen took our Northern Holland tour, bringing along his mother and his son: a multi-generational group spending some quality time together. Read on to find out how it went!
My mother Reina, my son Abel and I – three generations together – made a very special journey in April: the Northern Holland Tour with Boat Bike Tours. We boarded the Willemstad for a week filled with cycling, sailing, and discovering the beauty of Holland.

A journey for young and old
What made this trip so unique is that it truly offered something for everyone. For Abel, it was a great adventure: sleeping on a ship, cycling every day, and discovering nature, local traditions, and even some adventure along the way. For my mother, the comfort of the Willemstad was perfect: a cozy cabin, meals on board, and a warm place to relax after cycling. For me, it was above all the joy of experiencing this journey together, watching how three generations could all enjoy the same adventure in their own ways.

Cycling through tulip fields and charming villages
Since we traveled in April, the tulip fields were in full bloom. The colorful landscape, combined with quiet cycling paths and water all around us, made every ride special. We passed through typical Dutch villages, cycled by windmills, and crossed green farmland. A definite highlight was visiting Alkmaar and witnessing its cheese traditions. Even with the bad weather conditions we had!
Highlight: Discovering Texel
One of the most memorable days was our visit to Texel. Aboard the Willemstad, we sailed to this largest of the Wadden Islands, where we explored its wide-open landscapes by bike. We cycled past the dunes, spotted sheep with their lambs, and enjoyed the fresh sea air. Texel truly gave us the feeling of being far away, even though it was so close to home.
Crossing the waves to Stavoren
Another great moment was crossing the IJsselmeer to Stavoren. Experiencing the Willemstad as it sailed across this vast body of water was impressive, and arriving in the charming Frisian town of Stavoren felt like we were stepping into another world. There we cycled through a different kind of landscape, with historic houses, narrow streets, and the local tale of the “Lady of Stavoren” adding to the experience.
Life aboard the Willemstad
The Willemstad was our floating home base. Every day brought a new cycling route, and in the evening we were warmly welcomed back on the ship. The atmosphere onboard was both cozy and international: our group included guests from the United States, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands. During dinner or out on deck, we shared stories and experiences, which gave the trip an extra dimension.
An experience to remember
What makes this journey truly unforgettable is not only the beauty of North Holland and Friesland, but especially the fact that I got to experience it together with my mother and my son. It was wonderful to see how three generations, each with their own pace and interests, could share such a great adventure. I can highly recommend it: a Boat Bike Tour is not just a vacation; it’s a memory you create together.
