At Boat Bike Tours, we believe that travel is more than moving from place to place. It’s about connection. That’s why we’re proud to offer our guests not just bike and boat tours across Europe, but also unforgettable shared experiences. And recently, we brought that same spirit home to Amsterdam with a heartfelt event that touched everyone involved.
A unique journey, this time without bicycles
On a crisp Sunday after the close of our sailing season, the ship De Amsterdam set off once more. But this time, it wasn’t our usual travelers on board. Instead, we welcomed 100 elderly guests from all corners of Amsterdam for a special day of sailing, stories, and song, all completely free of charge. Many of these guests live alone or with limited social interaction. Through partnerships with music program Tour de Chant and the Amsterdam Public Library (OBA), we reached out to seniors in neighborhoods like Molenwijk, Reigersbos, and Mercatorplein. TCA taxis brought them to the harbor, where our crew greeted them with warm smiles and a beautifully prepared buffet.

Music, memories, and new connections
As we cruised across the IJ, guests enjoyed a presentation about Boat Bike Tours and the stories behind our journeys. The mood on board was cheerful and curious, many had never heard of our tours, and their questions showed genuine interest. Then came the music: beloved Dutch songs, French chansons, and timeless jazz numbers brought to life by talented singers and a pianist. The crowd swayed and sang along, ending with the classic Aan de Amsterdamse grachten. It was a beautiful moment of community, a reminder that joy and connection don’t need a passport.

Why we did it and what comes next
This event wasn’t just about a lovely afternoon on the water. It reflects a deeper commitment to what we call “new wealth”. Creating value not only for our guests but also for the society and environment we’re part of. We know that not everyone has the means or confidence to book a travel experience. But we believe everyone deserves moments of joy and togetherness.
Was it a lot of work? Absolutely. But seeing the smiles, the conversations, and the connections formed made it more than worth it. We’re already in talks with the OBA about doing it again.
Because whether it’s on a week-long tour or a single day on the water, Boat Bike Tours is about making every guest feel seen, welcomed, and inspired.
