About this tour

From Bamberg to Regensburg, follow the Danube and the Main-Danube Canal to discover the most beautiful sides of Southern Germany: active on your bike, relaxed on board. Starting in the charming city of Bamberg, your route takes you through impressive landscapes and picturesque old towns steeped in tradition all the way to Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ride through scenic river valleys and past monasteries, Baroque architecture, and cozy beer gardens. After a day of exploring, your comfortable ship offers space to relax, enjoy good food, and recharge. A journey full of nature, history, and the real spirit of Bavaria!

The ship – Your sailing hotel
Between bike rides, you’ll cruise along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You’ll dine, sleep and eat breakfast on board and you’ll receive a packed lunch every day. It’s also possible to spend a day on board if you’d like. There are rental bikes on board, but you can also bring your own (only on request).

Perfect for more experienced cyclists
With a detailed map of the area and a suggested route for close-range explorations, you’ll decide each day where you’ll go and how fast to ride. Each evening, the ship’s crew will introduce you to the next day’s bike route, explaining the difficult parts, offering tips about the best places to stop for a drink or lunch, and pointing out the sightseeing highlights. In case of emergencies or problems, the crew can be contacted. But since the ship will be sailing to the next port while you bike, they can only offer assistance by phone.

Day to day program Bamberg - Regensburg

Day 1: Bamberg – Embarkation

Take the opportunity before boarding to enjoy a relaxed stroll through the city. Perhaps visit the cathedral, walk along the Regnitz River, or try your first Franconian beer in one of the traditional taverns. Welcome to Bamberg!
The crew welcomes you on board from 4 p.m.

Day 2: Bamberg – Erlangen (approx. 45 km/ 28 mi.)

Your first cycling day starts in Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Franconian beauty, Bamberg is full of medieval charm, with its narrow lanes and famous old town. From Bamberg, you’ll cycle through the meadow landscapes of the Regnitz Valley, stopping in Forchheim – a small and welcoming Franconian town – before finishing your ride in Erlangen.

Day 3: Erlangen – Nuremberg (approx. 30 km/18.6 mi.)

Today’s route takes you through flat landscapes and sandy pine forests, past river meadows shaded by tall oaks entwined with wild hops. Passing Fürth – a detour into the town is well worth it – you’ll follow the Regnitz Cycle Path past the historic “Kettensteg” and “Henkersteg” bridges to the end of today’s ride: Nuremberg. A fascinating mix of medieval charm, impressive architecture, and vibrant urban culture awaits you.

Day 4: Nuremberg – Hilpolstein (approx. 40 km/24.8 mi.)

The historic Main-Danube Canal, built under King Ludwig I and known as the Ludwig Canal, will be your constant companion today. It is one of the oldest canals in the world, offering beautiful panoramas and featuring 101 locks. Towards the end of your ride, you’ll enter the Rothsee Nature Park and reach Hilpoltstein, the gateway to the Franconian Lake District.

Day 5: Hilpoltstein – Beilngries (approx. 40 km/24.8 mi.)

Today’s bike route will take you through one of Bavaria’s most scenic landscapes: the Altmühl Valley. You’ll start in Hilpoltstein and follow the well-marked Altmühl Valley Cycle Path, riding alongside the gently winding Main-Danube Canal. Lush meadows, rugged cliffs, and historic locks line your route: a relaxed journey through nature and history. Beilngries, a charming old town with medieval flair, is the perfect ending to a wonderful day of cycling.

Day 6: Beilngries – Riedenburg (approx. 30 km/18.6 mi.)

The most beautiful stretch of the Altmühl Valley lies ahead! Along the way, a succession of informational panels provides insights into the region’s history and the unique geology of the valley. There are plenty of opportunities to take a coffee break or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. Today’s destination is the charming town of Riedenburg, known as the “Pearl of the Altmühl Valley.” Surrounded by castle ruins and forested hills, it’s the perfect place to linger: a real insider tip for lovers of nature and culture alike.

Day 7: Riedenburg – Regensburg (approx. 55 km/34.1 mi.)

Today’s route once again leads you through peaceful landscapes and past small villages. A highlight of the day is Kelheim, where the Altmühl meets the Danube. High above the town stands the impressive Hall of Liberation: a striking monument built under King Ludwig I. After a short climb, you’ll be rewarded with wide views over the river landscape.
Next, you’ll follow the Danube to magnificent Regensburg, one of Germany’s oldest cities and, like Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Look forward to a destination rich in history, impressive architecture, and authentic Bavarian character.

Day 8: Departure from Regensburg

After breakfast, checkout until 9:00 a.m. Have a safe journey home!

Good to know
  • Cycle routes: The daily cycling routes are non-guided. You’ll ride independently with the help of a GPS tracker via GUIBO-app. The on-board tour manager will provide you with all necessary information about the route during the daily briefings. The on-board tour manager doesn’t cycle the route, but can always be reached via cell phone.
  • Profile: You’ll cycle along towpaths by the canals or on quiet country roads, farm tracks, and forest paths. A few longer climbs are part of the route, so a basic level of fitness is recommended.
  • Excursions: We offer a small excursion program that can be booked directly on board with the cruise director only. You’ll receive a brief description together with your travel documents. Depending on the number of participants, some excursions might be carried out in two languages: German and English.
  • Luggage: We recommend that you bring rainwear, a bicycle helmet, a sunhat and sneakers.
  • Schedule and itinerary changes: We reserve the right to make changes of routing and/or itinerary. In case of flood or low water level, the shipping company reserves the right to bridge parts of the routes using buses. In extreme situations, the shipping company reserves the right to cancel the journey on short notice. No legal right shall be constituted in either situation. The same applies for officially-ordered, last-minute repair work on locks or bridges.
  • Note: Please be aware that a cruise ship is not only your hotel but also a machine, running on engine power day and night. In particular, passing through locks and bridges – and the preparation work to pass through them – may cause noise. If you are sensitive, please bring your own ear plugs.
  • Digital travel documents and roadmaps: In the interest of sustainability and climate protection, please choose our digital route book instead of printed travel documents. The GUIBO app is your constant companion during your trip. A glance at your smartphone is enough to keep you safe and worry-free, with all the important information at hand. Travel information, ship and contact details and your daily bike routes are available digitally in the route book, which is offline and thus accessible at any time. The app is available for free and works on all standard smartphones. Before your journey begins, you’ll automatically receive, via e-mail, the information and code needed to download your booked trip.
  • Travel documents: EU-citizens (without special situations like dual citizenship, main residence abroad or a limited-validity passport) are required to have a valid passport or ID-card, not expiring within six (6) months of the return of your cruise. We kindly ask non-EU citizens, EU-nationals with multiple citizenship or anybody who is required to respect special legal entry requirements for the country you are visiting to inquire about visa and entry documents at the relevant country’s embassy.
  • This trip is not suitable for guests with reduced mobility.
  • We recommend that you take out travel health insurance with repatriation coverage as well as baggage, accident and travel cancellation insurances.

Day to day program Regensburg - Bamberg

Day 1: Regensburg – Embarkation

Individual arrival in Regensburg. The well-preserved historic old town and the Stadtamhof district, with their many architectural monuments, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2006. It is said that Regensburg boasts around 6,000 listed buildings: more than any other city in Europe!
The crew welcomes you on board from 4 p.m.

Day 2: Regensburg – Riedenburg (approx. 55 km/34.1 mi.)

Your first day’s bike ride will take you through idyllic landscapes and past small villages. A first highlight awaits you in Kelheim, where the Altmühl and Danube rivers meet. Towering above the town is the impressive Liberation Hall, a monumental structure commissioned by King Ludwig I, which rewards a short climb with spectacular panoramic views. Your journey continues through the Altmühltal Nature Park, winding through forested valleys and past striking rock formations and castle ruins. The day’s destination is the charming town of Riedenburg, often called the “Pearl of the Altmühl Valley.” Here, you can enjoy the medieval atmosphere and relax in one of the cozy beer gardens.

Day 3: Riedenburg – Beilngries (approx. 30 km/18.6 mi.)

Offering a relaxed ride through the heart of the Altmühl Valley, today’s cycling route follows well-developed bike paths with hardly any inclines, leading you to the charming town of Beilngries, with its winding alleys and Baroque parish church. Along the way, numerous informational panels offer insights into the region’s history and the geological features of the Altmühl Valley. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for a coffee or simply take in the peaceful beauty of the nature around you.

Day 4: Beilngries – Hilpolstein  (approx. 40 km/24.8 mi.)

The cycling route today first takes you to the old town of Freystadt, where you can explore the town center and visit the Baroque pilgrimage church “Maria-Hilf-Wallfahrtskirche,” one of the most important Baroque churches in Germany, beautifully situated in a meadow just outside town. The end point of today’s ride is Hilpoltstein.

Day 5: Hilpoltstein – Nuremberg (approx. 40 km/24.8 mi.)

From Hilpoltstein, you’ll cycle today through Rothsee Nature Park before reaching one of the oldest canals in the world: the historic Main-Danube Canal, built under King Ludwig I, also known as the Ludwig Canal. With its 101 locks and scenic views, it’s a true engineering and landscape highlight. In the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Nuremberg, a city rich in history with a beautifully-restored medieval old town. Follow the “Historic Mile” to see the city’s most important and authentic buildings, carefully reconstructed after their destruction in World War II.

Day 6: Nuremberg – Erlangen (approx. 30 km/18.6 mi.)

Today, the Regnitz Cycle Route will take you along a scenic valley route through lush greenery. As you leave the city, you’ll pass iconic landmarks like the “Kettensteg” (Chain Bridge), the “Henkersteg” (Hangman’s Bridge), and the historic craftsmen’s houses of Weißgerbergasse, before continuing through the green Hallerwiesen meadows.

The ride leads you through the restored floodplains of the Pegnitz River toward Fürth. A short detour into the heart of the town is well worth it! From there, you’ll continue along river meadows shaded by tall oaks entwined with wild hops, through flat countryside and sandy pine forests, until you reach the ship’s mooring place in Erlangen.

Day 7: Erlangen – Bamberg (approx. 45 km/28 mi.)

Your final day of cycling will take you through the meadow landscapes of the Regnitz Valley, continuing along the Regnitz Cycle Route. Take a break at one of the many traditional beer gardens along the way and enjoy a refreshing beer or a slice of homemade cake. You’ll stop in Forchheim, a small and charming Franconian town, before cycling on to the thousand-year-old imperial city of Bamberg.

Day 8: Departure from Bamberg
