This Sail and Bike tour combines light activity on two wheels with relaxed time on board as you travel through northern Belgium and southwestern Netherlands. From the lively city of Antwerp to the open landscapes of Zeeland, the route leads through a region shaped by water over its a long history.
You'll travel aboard the beautiful three-master Elizabeth, a sailing ship that gives this journey its distinctive character. During the week, you'll not only cycle through a variety of landscapes, but also experience the pleasure of sailing in calm inland and coastal waters. While no sailing experience is needed to join this tour, the crew will gladly explain how it works and, if you're interested, you can even learn how to help set the sails.
Your journey begins in Antwerp, Belgium’s great port city on the Scheldt River, internationally known for its diamond trade, its connection to the famous baroque painter Rubens, and its reputation for fashion and culture. Soon after boarding, you'll leave the city behind and sail along the broad Scheldt estuary toward the quiet village of Doel. Over the following days, you'll cycle through Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, along the North Sea coast, and across one of the Netherlands’ most remarkable water landscapes.
Along the way, you'll take in fortified towns and historic harbors. At the same time, you'll see a rich water-centered landscape in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen: beaches, dunes, locks, sea dikes, creeks, salt marshes, mudflats, and broad estuaries where river and sea meet. Another major highlight is the crossing near Neeltje Jans, where the Dutch battle against the sea becomes visible in the impressive Delta Works.
With the ship always nearby, this tour offers a wonderful balance of comfort, activity and variety. It is ideal for travelers who enjoy fresh sea air, ever-changing scenery, and the special rhythm of exploring by both bike and sailing ship.
The ship – Your sailing hotel
In between cycling excursions, you sail along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You dine, sleep and eat breakfast on board. You’ll receive a packed lunch every day, and you can usually choose between a longer or shorter bike ride. It’s also possible to spend a day on board if you like. There are rental bikes on board, but you can also bring your own if you mention it when booking.
Perfect for more experienced cyclists
With a detailed map of the area and a suggested route for close-range explorations, you decide where you head and how fast you ride. During the evening prior to next day’s cycling tour, the ship’s crew will explain some difficult parts, offer tips about the nicest places to stop for a drink or lunch, and mention the best highlights. In case of emergencies or problems, the crew can be contacted. But – as the ship is sailing to the next port – they can only offer assistance by phone.
Check-in begins at 2:00 PM, with the ship moored close to Antwerp’s city center. Antwerp is one of Europe’s major port cities and also a lively destination, known for its diamond trade, art, fashion, and a rich cultural life.
Once everyone is on board, your journey begins aboard the three-master Elizabeth. Under engine and sail, the ship travels through the lower Flanders region toward the village of Doel. Settle into your cabin, unpack your bags, enjoy your first drink on deck, and watch the landscape gradually become calmer as the Scheldt leads you toward its estuary. This is also the perfect moment to get to know the crew and your fellow travelers. As this is a true Sail and Bike journey, the crew will also introduce you to life on board and the experience of sailing.
In the morning, the ship cruises a short distance after breakfast, and you'll soon reach the tiny village of Paal as you cross from Belgium into the Netherlands. Here, your first bike ride begins.
You can choose between two routes. The longer route leads to Hulst, one of the best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands, where old walls, historic streets, and striking monuments still reflect the town’s long past. From there, you'll continue on to Terneuzen, a port town on the Western Scheldt with a distinctly maritime character. A shorter cycling option is also available. No matter which route you choose, the ship will be waiting for you in Terneuzen at the end of the day.
Today you'll continue through Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, in the far southwest of the Netherlands: a region with a distinct identity and atmosphere. Located next to Belgium, it has long been known for its relaxed, almost Burgundian character. At the same time, its scenery is unique in that the landscape is a combination of natural and built features: beaches, dunes and tidal areas, but also dikes and polders – pastures "reclaimed" from the sea by draining them – along the Western Scheldt. At the end of today's ride, you'll rejoin the ship and sail together toward the Zeeland mainland.
Today’s circular ride starts and ends in Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland. The city is known for its canals, historic alleyways, many old buildings, the impressive late Gothic town hall, and the Lange Jan tower: all reminders of the prosperity it enjoyed during the Dutch Golden Age.
From Middelburg, you'll cycle toward Vlissingen on the North Sea coast. At the mouth of the Western Scheldt, Vlissingen is a true seaport where you can almost touch the passing ships. You'll then follow the coastline past dunes and beaches toward Westkapelle, a village dramatically situated behind a huge sea wall and known for its lighthouses and long sea dike. The route then returns to Middelburg. It is a day filled with fresh sea air, broad views, and the unmistakable feeling of the Zeeland coast.
Today’s ride first leads to Veere, one of Zeeland’s most charming small towns, beautifully situated on the Veerse Meer. Its old harbor, many 15th- and 16th-century buildings, and historic waterfront give it a wonderfully atmospheric character. Veere also has a fascinating Scottish connection: the Schotse Huizen, or Scottish Houses, recall the town’s once-flourishing wool trade with Scotland.
From Veere, you'll continue toward Neeltje Jans. One of today’s highlights is the crossing of the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier, the most impressive part of the Delta Works. The barrier is 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) long and rests on 65 massive concrete pillars. On the artificial island of Neeltje Jans, you can learn more about this extraordinary Dutch feat of water management. Afterwards, you'll continue to the ship's mooring spot for the night in Kamperland, an area surrounded by water and well known for its open landscape and water recreation.
Today is all about sailing. If you were lucky enough to see the sails up earlier in the week, today offers more time to fully enjoy life aboard the Elizabeth. You'll sail through calm waters, pass through locks, cross the Oosterschelde estuary, and continue onward to Hansweert. There is no need to know anything about sailing in advance, but for those who are interested, the crew will gladly explain what to do on board. If you wish, you can even learn how to help set the sails.
On the final cycling day, you'll set off from Hansweert for one last bike ride to Zandvliet, just north of Antwerp in Belgium. From here, you'll sail back to Antwerp. It is a fitting conclusion to a week of varied landscapes, sea air, calm waters, and memorable moments shared on board and ashore.
End of tour. After breakfast, disembarkation takes place until 9:30 AM.
Important observations for the Sail & Bike program: A little bit of adventure is a part of every Sail & Bike tour: the departure and arrival day and the location – Antwerp – are a certainty, 100%. For the rest, the planned daily sailing routes are partially dependent on the strength and direction of the winds. The skipper decides the best route to be taken day by day, and discusses the options with his guests. The crew does everything in its power to enable the program to run according to plan and to offer you as fascinating, varied and active a week as possible, in which nature and culture play a major part. It is, however, also possible that departure times and the time spent on the water – and even the order of the program itself – may be adjusted. Enjoy the ride and let yourself be led by the elements! Whenever possible, various passages will be undertaken fully rigged and anyone who would like to help the crew to sail and steer the boat is welcome to do so. This is of course absolutely up to you and no sailing experience is necessary.
The rental bikes on our ships are unisex bicycles with a low bar and a comfortable upright sitting position. These are stable and dependable bikes, good for miles in the saddle. Neither the crew nor Boat Bike tours is responsible in any way for any damage, loss or theft of a guest’s own bike or e-bike or its accessories.
