Sail & Bike Highlights of Tuscany

The south of Italy – could there be a higher epitome of summer living? If you look at Tuscany, no! Just think of what comes to mind… Tuscany: the sighing sea at your feet, rolling hills to the sky, the fusion of modern and classic architecture, the singsong Italian language, the aroma of citrus fruits, sea salt and herbs, and, of course, the fantastic cuisine and wine. Italy is balsam for the soul! If this description has you pining for Italy’s ‘dolce vita’, then think about joining us in the magnificent scenery of Tuscany on our Sail & Bike tour.

Get on your E-bike and cycle in the land of the ancient Etruscan civilization, weaving your way through vineyards, olive groves, bucolic countryside, fields of sunflowers and stands of Cypress trees. Imagine riding into vibrant, picture-postcard villages that appear unchanged since medieval times — and then swapping cobblestoned streets for sandy beaches stretching as far as the eye can see, and refreshing swims in the sparkling deep blue.

If you join us, you’ll find a home away from home on The Atlantis. This ship will be both your accommodation and vessel as you make your relaxed way along the Tuscan coast, with a true seafaring atmosphere unfolding under its giant sails. It’ll be both your springboard to wonderful daily cycling adventures — and a literal springboard if you feel like diving into the calm coastal waters!

Please note: The itinerary depends strongly on the wind conditions. Therefore, all harbors and anchorages must be flexibly adapted to the weather conditions on each trip. Understanding for flexibility within the tour program is kindly requested.

    Itinerary

Day 1 Porto Santo Stefano (Embarkation)

Boarding takes place from 6 pm in Porto St. Stefano, a vibrant harbor town on the Monte Argentario Peninsula’s northern coast. Those who arrive earlier are welcome to check their luggage in after 2 pm — and then treat themselves to a relaxed walk through the old town’s romantic pastel-hued streets. You’ve made it! Or perhaps you still have some more time on your hands? Then definitely take a stroll up to the Spagnola fortress, which has watched over the city since the 17th century. By that point, you’ll have worked up a decent appetite, and — perfect timing — your first onboard meal will let you meet your new travel partners, tour leaders and crew before you bed down for the night in your cozy floating hotel.

Day 2 Porto Santo Stefano – Talamone
    40km24 mi

From Porto St. Stefano your first bike tour takes you to the historic town of Orbetello. With a little bit of  luck you can admire the spectacular swarm of flamingos in the WWF natural oasis Laguna di Orbetello. Afterwards your cycle tour will take you to the ruins of the fortified Roman town of Cosa and later through the Duna Feniglia nature reserve, whose beautiful pine forest will enchant you. We cycle mostly on cycle paths and return to Porto Santo Stefano where the Atlantis awaits our arrival for a crossing to Talamone.

Day 3 Talamone – Porto Azzurro

After breakfast, it’s time for a sailing voyage! A long crossing to Elba awaits us. If the winds are favourable, guests receive a briefing on sailing and can help set sail together. After Sicily and Sardinia, Elba is the third largest island in Italy and it impresses with its charm, lush nature and rich history. Lunch will be served on board and guests have time for a swim before we arrive in the sheltered bay of Porto Azzuro. In the evening, you can explore the charming harbour town.

Day 4 Porto Azzuro – Capoliveri – Porto Azzurro
    27km16 mi

Today’s tour of the multi-facetted island of Elba takes us to the lively town of Capoliveri, where we soak up the Italian charm and enjoy a delicious ice cream and coffee. The tour continues along a beautiful panoramic road, followed by a lunch break, before taking us back to Porto Azurro. In the evening, island hopping invites us to a wine tasting.

Day 5 Porto Azzuro – Enfola Bay
    40km24 mi

Today we can look forward to a somewhat longer tour from Porto Azzuro to the north of the island of Elba. After a coffee break in Rio nell’ Elba we head to one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the trip. From Voltereio we can look out over the beautiful bay of Portoferreio, the capital of the island. After lunch, we cycle the last few kilometres to the bay of Enfola.

Day 6 Marciana Marina – Marina di Campo
    30km18 mi

Today the queen’s stage awaits us! We cycle over the island, visiting the mountain village of Marciana along the way before reaching the highest point of the tour at Monte Perone. From here we are rewarded with a wonderful decent to the village of San Piero in Campo, where we can enjoy a delicious lunch with a view of our ship. Once back on the ship there is plenty of time for a refreshing swim directly from the boat. Afterwards, the sails are set, and we head for Isola Giglio, an island located in the very south of the Tuscan Archipelago. This Italian jewel is home to mountains, forest, untouched nature, and crystal-clear sea!

Day 7 Island Giglio – Porto Santo Stefano
    15km9 mi

We begin our cycling tour in Campese on the west of the island. The destination for today is the medieval town of Giglio Castello, enthroned like an impregnable castle high up on the island of Giglio. A quick descent takes us down to Giglio Porto. After dinner, the sails are set for the island of Giglio. Isola Giglio is located in the very south of the Tuscan archipelago and is a scenic jewel. Mountains, forest, untouched nature and crystal-clear sea!

Day 8 Porto Santo Stefano (Disembarkation)

Enjoy one final breakfast on board, before disembarking at 9 am. Now the choice is yours — head home with a wealth of marvelous Tuscan memories — or stay longer in Tuscany to make even more!

    Good to know
    • Changes We reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary, depending on wind and weather conditions or organizational requirements. Depending on the direction of the prevailing winds, this tour can also take place in reverse order.
    • LEVEL 5 /5: Cycling tours through mountainous terrain with demanding ascents exceeding 600 meters. All tours, including the elevation gains, can be mastered more easily with electronic assistance. Requires excellent bike handling, even on descents with steep hairpin turns and unpaved paths.
      • Elevation: 200 – 700 meters of elevation per day
      • Road conditions: The roads are mostly asphalted and there is little traffic outside of holiday periods. On the islands of Elba and Giglio, some short sections lead over unpaved gravel and field tracks.
      • Traffic: Traffic is to be expected in and around coastal towns. Some road sections close to the island capital Portoferraio have more traffic.
      • Infrastructure: There are only a few designated bike paths in Toskana, so the bike tours take place on public roads, preferably on quiet side streets.
    • Relevant for all levels: Safe cycling skills and familiarity with road traffic are prerequisites for taking part in our tours. Anyone renting an e-bike should already have experience and be confident in handling e-bikes, as these bikes are significantly heavier and faster than conventional bikes.
    • Individual cycling This tour is primarily a guided group tour. Upon consultation with your tour guides, the possibility to cycle on your own along recommended, suitable routes, may present itself. You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend on board the boat, instead of taking a planned bike tour.
    • Special requirements on Tall Ships As our sailing ship is too big for small fishing ports, most nights are spent on anchor. This means that the cycling day often begins with a short crossing to shore in a dinghy. Sure-footedness and a certain degree of mobility are required when getting on and off a tall ship. The tour guides and crew are always happy to give assistance if necessary.
    • Group riding pace On our e-bike tour programs, the riding pace is determined by the cyclists on e-bikes. Guests who are taking part on these tours on a gravel bike should have the necessary physical condition to keep up with this pace. We thank you for your understanding.
    • Children We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the cycle tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental e-bike is 1.50 m (5 ft.). When travelling with children, we recommend our Multi-Adventure Tours in Greece and Croatia which are specifically curated for families and offer family-friendly pricing.
    • Catering This tour includes half board. Due to the differing daily programs, some days will have no warm meals included while others will include both lunch and dinner on board. Breakfast is available on board every day.
    • Language Due to our international audience all tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.
    • Good to know Luggage: Please bring your personal belongings in foldable travel bags. Please avoid hard protective cases. They will be too large and heavy to store within your cabin. Payment on Board: cash only
    • Specials features at harbours and while dropping anchor Our tall ship is too large to dock in many of the small fishing harbours we visit and therefore spends most nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy must be used to get to land. Surefootedness, balance, and a certain degree of agility are therefore required to get on and off the boat. Needless to say, our tour guides are always happy to lend a helping hand. It is also important to remember that in general, wind, swell, and tidal changes have significant influences on tours by tall ship.

Great ship and crew. Poor food

Great crew. Nice room. Beautiful ship. Friendly passengers Food very mediocre. Chef went to little trouble on the meals. Everyone agreed

Think twice before booking Boat and BIke Tour from experience on the Atlantis.

I have to start off by saying the this was my 3rd trip similar trip, 2nd with Island Hopper and once with a competitor company and this was the worst of the 3. Food was barely palatable. Why was the best dinner, where food was being made on deck supported by left over shellfish and other food from the night before? Staff that were managing the rooms were basically non-existent. Having towels changed once in 6 days is not acceptable. Asking to clean up the bathrooms at least once for the 6 days was never done. Service for drinks and other amenities by the young staff were superior but senior staff were not up to par. Tour guides were fine. Basic ship handling was fine but as I mentioned I have been more impressed in the past. The fellow guests were a hoot. The day of sailing was a nightmare and why didn’t senior staff offer seasick pills ahead of time knowing how rough the seas would be. They should have offered everyone seasick pills. Ultimately 1/2 of the passengers were really seasick some laying on the deck for hours. Think twice before booking a trip on the Atlantis.

      Reply from Boat Bike Tours

Hi Jeffrey, Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent experience with our Boat and Bike Tour on the Atlantis. We would like to respond to your concerns and comments in order to improve our services and provide a better experience for our guests. First and foremost, we would like to apologize for any disappointment you experienced during your trip. It is important for us to know where we fell short, and we appreciate your candor. Meals: We understand that the quality of the food is a significant aspect of your travel experience. Our chef always strives to prepare the best meals, but it seems that the first meal did not meet your expectations. We take your comments seriously and will focus our efforts on improving the consistency of our meals. Towel Service: We are sorry that you were not satisfied with our towel service. We typically change towels once a week, but we understand that some guests may need towels more frequently. In the future, we will ensure that our guests are aware of this option to request additional towels. Cleaning: We regret that your request for more frequent bathroom cleaning was not accommodated. We will discuss this with our crew to ensure that guests have a cleaner and more comfortable stay in the future. Seasick Pills: We understand that the unexpectedly rough seas on the day of sailing posed a challenge for some guests. Unfortunately, we are not authorized to provide seasickness pills on board. However, we will consider informing guests of this situation before departure so that they can be prepared. Atmosphere: We appreciate your comments about the informal and relaxed atmosphere on board. This is something that many of our guests enjoy. However, we will continue to work on improving overall service quality and communication. We would like to thank you for sharing your thoughts and hope you understand that we take your feedback seriously. Our goal is to ensure that every guest has an enjoyable and memorable trip. We hope you will consider giving us the opportunity to serve you again in the future and exceed your expectations. Best regards,

      Fantastic tour guide

Fantastic tour guide which made the trip for us. Most of crew ok a few were pretty miserable and looked like they wanted to be elsewhere but maybe it was a language barrier. Food ok. Tour guide did many extras which did not go unnoticed a wine tasting, buying water & generally making out trip better

      Reply from Boat Bike Tours

We’re happy to hear that your tour guide made the trip special with added extras. We appreciate your feedback about the crew and food and will work to make improvements. Thank you for sharing your experience, and we look forward to hosting you again in the future! Best regards, Boat Bike Tours

      Terrific Tuscany

The tour was, as always, very good. It is an experience. The guides are excellent and the crew the same. Good food is always served up. However the accommodation was not so good. The cabins are small, which we accept, but the wet room never drained and the door to the bathroom couldn t be shut, minor things but became a bit irritating over a week.
