The Bruges to Antwerp bike and barge tour is an absolute cycling classic that takes you through an enchanting river landscape bookended by these two iconic Belgian cities. During this four-day, three-night tour you’ll not only have the opportunity to discover Belgium’s enchanting rivers and canals, but you’ll also visit and explore the historic gems of Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp.

Along the way you’ll cycle through traditional little Belgian villages, visit several famous local landmarks and, last but certainly not least, have the chance to experience Belgium’s superb culinary culture for yourself. Enjoy a coffee or delicious local beer in an authentic Belgian pub, where the locals love to raise a glass, especially when you arrive by bike.

The ship – Your sailing hotel
In between cycling excursions, you cruise along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You dine, sleep and eat breakfast on board. You’ll receive a packed lunch every day, and you can usually choose between a longer or shorter bike ride. It’s also possible to spend a day on board if you like. There are rental bikes on board, but you can also bring your own if you mention it when booking.

You cycle independently
During this trip there is an expert and experienced tour leader on board. He or she will discuss the next day’s cycling routes on a daily basis and provide you with tips and information about the route. You will cycle the tours independently and at your own pace using a detailed cycling map, GPS directions via the free Ride With GPS app and printed route descriptions (available on board). The tour leader will also cycle the routes, so they will be riding nearby and can be reached by phone in case of emergencies, problems or questions.

Day 1: Bruges (15 km/9 mi.) | Bruges – Ghent

Embarkation time in Bruges is between 1-1.30 p.m. The ship will be awaiting you in the Bruges harbor. After a welcome meeting with the crew at 1.30pm, the ship departs at 2 p.m. from Bruges to a suburb where there is time for bicycle fitting and a short test-ride through the countryside around Bruges. During dinner the barge sails into Ghent, a lively university city, again one with a rich past. The city has its origins in Roman Times, at the place where the rivers Leie and Schelde converge. This favorable situation brought a great deal of prosperity over the years, which had its peak late 13th, early 14th century. Textile industry brought great wealth. In the city center many old patrician houses have been preserved. In the Clothmakers’ Hall (1425) textile merchants used to meet. Major church is St. Baafs’ Cathedral, raised in various ages and in various styles. In the cathedral you can admire a number of masterpieces of mediaeval painting, of which the ‘Adoration of the Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck is the most famous.

We advise you to come to Bruges one or more days earlier, so that you will have plenty of time to discover the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical city of Bruges, aptly named the “Pearl of Flanders”. While you are there make sure you visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

Day 2: Ghent – Dendermonde/St. Amands (40 km/24 mi. or 53 km/32 mi.)

Start the day spending some time in Ghent. Later in the morning you’ll cycle downstream through a diverse landscape along the tidal Schelde River to Dendermonde located at the confluence of Dender and Schelde rivers. There is only one way to describe the landscape along the Schelde and that is: “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour. During this section of the Schelde the speed of the ship will be determined by the height of the tide. You will travel from Dendermonde to St. Amands by either bicycle or barge depending on the tides. Your floating hotel will be docked for the night in St. Amands.

Day 3: St. Amands – Temse – Antwerp (32 km/19 mi. or 49 km/31 mi.)

Today we will follow the Schelde river further downstream through the Temse region to Antwerp. Over the centuries the Schelde river has held strategic importance for the Romans, Vikings, Spanish and Napoleon… Today it is a beautiful waterway just perfect for bike and barge holidays!  Antwerp, your destination for the day, is a harbor city famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and as the birthplace of the famous painter Sir Peter Paul Rubens. There are many highlights in the city to discover including: The City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle.

Day 4: Antwerp

Today is the last day of this short but sweet cycling cruise. You’ll still have an entire day to discover this city of culture, cobblestones and Baroque Flemish masterpieces. In the morning your tour leader will take you for a walk through the center of Antwerp to visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady. Here you can admire paintings by the famous painter Rubens. In the afternoon you can explore this multifaceted city on your own. Visit the Rubens House, the palazzo where the brilliant and versatile artist lived with his family. Other ways to spend a pleasant afternoon are a tasting tour at the famous ‘de Koninck’ beer brewery; exploring the fascinating and modern MAS Museum on the Scheldt River; or going shopping on Antwerp’s fashionable Nationalestraat.

As it’s the last day, we’ll ask you to check out of your cabin straight after breakfast. Your luggage can stay on board and can be picked up at any time.

Embarkation and check-in at 2 p.m., where the crew will welcome you on board. In the afternoon there’s time to select your bike and take a short test ride.

The ship is moored in the port city of Antwerp, situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and is a city with a long list of attractions including: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle.

Day 2: Antwerp – Temse – St. Amands (34 km/21 mi. or 49 km/31 mi.)

This morning you will cycle out of Antwerp along a picturesque section of the Schelde River to St. Amands your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

Day 3: St. Amands – Dendermonde | Dendermonde– Ghent (52 km/32 mi.)

Today you will continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the ship will moor for the night at a lock in a suburb of town. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. Since Roman times Ghent’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers has ensured that it has been a successful trading port.  In total the city features an Opera House, 18 museums, more than 100 churches and over 400 historical buildings. Major attractions are St. Bavo Cathedral where a number of masterpieces of medieval art including the world famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck are kept and the 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent, one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city center. Before dinner a small canal boat will take you for a guided tour through the historic city.

Day 4: Ghent – Bruges (22 km/13 mi. or 45 km/28 mi.)

Today you will cycle from Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the ‘Venice of the North’ and arguably the most beautiful of all the Flemish cities. Bruges attracts more than two million visitors every year who come to see the picturesque medieval town center of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic city and a long list of historic attractions. An outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, Bruges has managed to maintain its historic fabric as it has evolved over the centuries, with the result that today the city’s original Gothic buildings form an integral part of the town’s identity. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

Day 5: Bruges
