The ship – Your sailing hotel
In between cycling excursions, you cruise along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You will sleep and have breakfast and 1 or 2 warm meals on board. Depending on the program, this will be lunch or dinner. The other meal is ashore (not included). It’s possible to spend a day on board if you like. There are rental bikes on board, but you can also bring your own if you mention it when booking.
Individual arrival in Split. Check-in on board starts at 1 pm on the western shore of Split's harbor bay. Afterwards, a guided city tour gives you the chance to explore the former Palace of Emperor Diocletian and to learn about its transformation into the city which it has become. Crossing to Omiš where we will spend the first night.
We cruise to the island of Brač, famous for its radiant, precious limestone that was, among others, used for the White House in Washington and in the construction of the German Reichstag building in Berlin. Once we have arrived on Brač we cycle along the picturesque northern coastline of the island from Postira to Milna. Before descending to Milna to meet the boat, we can enjoy wonderful views across the Dalmatian islands. We board the boat and enjoy a relaxing cruise and replenishing lunch on our way to the artist’s town of Stari Grad on the Island of Hvar. On arrival we can participate in a second bike ride through the green planes of the island to the seaside town of Jelsa. After a break for coffee and ice cream, we continue the round trip back to Stari Grad where we spend the night.
Today’s cycling tour leads us from Stari Grad to the capital city of Hvar on the opposite side of the Island. Our cycle tour leads us through the untamed lavender fields of the island and small villages all the while accompanied by incredible views across the Dalmatian coastline. On arrival, make use of the time and go for a little stroll through the city of Hvar before boarding the boat. Standing on the magnificent Renaissance Square you can enjoy a view up to the Spanish fortress towering high above the city. We board the boat for lunch and cruise to the harbor town of Vela Luka on the Island of Korčula for the night.
Today’s cycle tour leads us across the charming island of Korčula all the way to Korčula city. A mild Mediterranean climate and a broad variety of different landscapes await us here. Take your time, and remember to take a break to enjoy the view over the deep blue sea and neighboring islands. The picturesque town of Korčula with its fishbone alleyways competes with Venice for the honor of being the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo. It is here that we spend the night and enjoy a guided city tour packed with fascinating anecdotes concerning the history of the city and the island.
In the morning we depart the bustling city of Korcula and make our way to the tranquil island of Lastovo. On our way we enjoy a swim stop directly from the boat and a delicious lunch before we set off to explore the island on our bikes. The island is one of the smaller inhabited islands in the Adriatic Sea. The Emperor Augustus appreciated the mild climate, and in Roman times it was even named “Augusta Insula” after him. The population of just over 800 still lives mainly from fishing in the waters rich in fish, agriculture and viticulture. The gold-coloured white wine “Marastina”, known even beyond Croatia’s borders, is grown here. A peaceful night in a secluded natural harbor is spent under a starry night sky.
In the morning we enjoy breakfast during a cruise to the green island of Mljet. Green because 70 % of its landmass is covered by woodland making it the most forested island in the Mediterranean region. Homer mentioned this lovely island in his epic poem “Odyssey”. He made it a home for the Nymph Calypso and the legendary Greek king Odysseus, who could not resist Calypso and stayed on Mljet for seven years. After a refreshing swim stop from the boat and lunch on board we arrive in the harbor of Pomena and enjoy a round tour on our bikes through the Mljet National Park in the afternoon. The night is spent in the harbor or Pomena.
From Pomena, we cycle the length of this wonderfully vegetated island, enjoying the shade of the trees along the way. Our boat waits for us in the harbour of Sobra where we embark and enjoy the last cruise of the week with our destination being the grand city of Dubrovnik. After arrival in Dubrovnik there is plenty of time to explore the UNESCO world Heritage city and to take part on a guided city tour. A cheerful evening meal on board the boat gives you time to celebrate the success of the week with fellow travelers and tour guides.
After breakfast disembarkation until 9 am and individual trip home or extended stay in Croatia.
Individual journey to Dubrovnik. Check-in on board starts between 2 and 2.30 pm at Gruž (2027: from 1 pm), the town port. At about 4.30 pm, there will be the opportunity to go on a guided tour through Dubrovnik, where we learn about the town’s history and visit the most impressive sites. The boat will spend the night in Gruž providing the opportunity to experience Dubrovnik’s nightlife.
In the morning we cross over to the nearby island of Šipan. Šipan is the largest of the Elaphiti Islands, yet still humble in size. A great place for our first bike tour and to get used to riding in a group. After our first tour we board the boat and enjoy a cruise to the green island of Mljet. The crew was excellent, especially our two guides, Martina and Ivan (and Roco the waitperson and bartender!) Our guides were top notch and entertaining, as well as super-experienced riders. The food was fine. There were fabulous views to behold and special activities to enjoy – especially the Olive Oil Museum and meal. HOWEVER I am not going to sugarcoat my review of the biking conditions themselves. I can t speak for experienced road cyclists, but for anyone else, unless you are already comfortable with the following conditions, you may want to consider a different tour than Pearls of Dalmatia. The conditions included: narrow or no shoulders, tunnels, steep drop-offs, no guardrails, and sharp curves on narrow roads that were not designed for 2-way car and truck traffic, plus lines of 30+ single file cyclists. Riding from sea level up each morning (there was a fair bit of elevation) and then back down to our boat each afternoon, that part was generally through the heaviest and most intense city or town traffic. So, yes, there were long stretches of countryside riding with sparse traffic, but a asignificant portion of the time, I knew that a 20-centimeter (8-inch) swerve of my front tire could send me careening over a steep ledge, down a cement wall, or alternatively, into passing traffic. So, my advice is: first timers beware!
This was the perfect vacation and the guides and crew were awesome!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We truly appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you on another Boat Bike Tours adventure in the future. Best regards, Team Boat Bike Tours
We have never been to Croatia, but are friends with several friends that have been there. This is our 5th trip with Boat Bike. We went with our Canadian friends that we met 2 years ago on the Amsterdam trip. We liked the smaller boat, limited to 20 guests, and the itinerary. The housekeeping services were good. The itinerary got even better during the trip. The Guides combined 2 days of smaller trips into one day and added another great ride on another day. Our group’s skill level was pretty evenly matched and we all really enjoyed the added day of bike riding. We’re glad we got e-bikes for this trip since islands are essentially the tops of mountains. It was beautiful, nicely paced and challenging enough. The food on the boat was great, too, and was a nice representation of the common Croation foods. I would recommend that one of the chefs introduce each of the meals and tell us what and why we’re having the foods being served. Also, having the menu posted each day would be appreciated. Other Boat Bike trips, and others, we’ve been on have done this and we and others appreciated that.
Thank you so much for your detailed review and for joining us on your fifth Boat Bike adventure, we truly value your loyalty! We re delighted to hear that you enjoyed exploring beautiful Croatia, the smaller group atmosphere, and the well-paced itinerary with its added cycling opportunities. It s wonderful that e-bikes made the rides both enjoyable and challenging in the best way, and that you appreciated the taste of Croatian cuisine on board. Thank you also for your thoughtful suggestions about introducing the meals and posting menus, we ll be sure to pass this feedback along to the team. We look forward to welcoming you back for your next journey with us! Best regards, Team Boat Bike Tours
The bike rides and scenery were great. I found the meals just average although the service was excellent. Our guides did an excellent job
