About this tour

From the metropolis of Berlin with its vast forests in the north, you will first sail to Schwedt on the Oder-Havel Canal, passing through Oranienburg and Eberswalde. The peaceful, unique beauty of the Oder landscape will accompany you to the Polish city of Szczecin with its magnificent castle. The river will then take you along the unique Bodden coast through Usedom to Germany’s largest island, to Rügen, with its famous chalk cliffs. The old Hanseatic city of Stralsund is today’s destination.

What could be more wonderful than sitting on the sun deck and enjoying the splendid views of the landscape slowly going by and finding out all sorts of interesting things about the country, people, culture and nature on lovely bike tours? Discover the varied flora and fauna of these unique fluvial landscapes, baroque castles, brick gothic and northern German seaside resort architecture.

The ship – Your sailing hotel
In between cycling excursions, you cruise along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You dine, sleep and eat breakfast on board. You’ll receive a packed lunch every day, and you can usually choose between a longer or shorter bike ride. It’s also possible to spend a day on board if you like. There are rental bikes on board, but you can also bring your own if you mention it when booking.

Day to day program Berlin - Stralsund

Details: In italics printed parts will be covered by the ship.

All distances are “approximate distances” of recommended bike tours.

Program and details barring changes, a.o. as a result of nautical, technical or meteorological reasons. If a certain route cannot be taken due to high or low tides, the Skipper retains the right to change the route for reasons of safety without this constituting any legal entitlement to a claim.

Because your boat will generally dock at the next port on the same day, your time frame for some activities and sight-seeing will be limited.

Due to a very low overhead clearance of some bridges the sundeck will be closed from time to time.

Day 1: Berlin

Individual arrival in Berlin. Embarkation at 4 p.m.. Berlin is always worth a trip. Maybe you’ll have some time and like to take a stroll on the Kurfürstendamm, take a walk through the Nicolai Quarter on Spree Island or take gander at the Brandenburg Gate. The possibilities of Berlin are almost endless.

Day 2: Berlin – Oranienburg (38 km/24 mi.) | Oranienburg – Eberswalde

The well-marked bike route meanders northward through the Ruppin sea area to Oranienburg. Sightseeing tip: the Baroque castle with its park, museum and orangery. This is your embarkation point, after which you will sail to Eberswalde. In the heart of the city, in the Finow Canal, is the oldest working lock in Germany, which has been a technical monument since 1978.

Day 3: Eberswalde – Schwedt (32 km/20 mi. or 64 km/40 mi.)  | Hohensaaten – Schwedt

First you will bike through the splendid landscape on the Treidel bike route along the Finow Canal, passing by forests, glades and small hills in the direction of Niederfinow (boat lift – a tour is always an option) to Hohensaaten. There you will get back on board and sail to Schwedt or if you still like to cycle you go by bike (32 km /20 mi.).

Day 4: Schwedt – Mescherin (30 km/19 mi.) | Mescherin – Szczecin

Today you will bike through a part of a unique, cross-border nature reserve, the “Lower Oder Valley National Park”, then on to Gartz and Mescherin, where you will get back on the boat. Then you will sail to Szczecin, the green city on the mouth of the Oder and one of the largest ports on the Baltic Sea. The reconstructed castle of the dukes of Pomerania situated in the city’s historic center is worth seeing. Tip: A guided walking tour through Szczecin (optional, approx. € 9 per Person).

Day 5: Szczecin – Wolgast, day of rest on board

Today you will spend all day on board. After one last narrow passage, the boat will arrive in the expansive waters of the Bay of Szczecin (Oder Lagoon). After the crossing, you will reach Wolgast, the „Gateway to Usedom Island”. The Medieval historic center with its town hall and the Church of St. Petri are interesting sights in any case. Tip: A guided walking tour through Wolgast (optional, approx. € 10 per Person).

Day 6: Wolgast – Peenemünde (15 km/9 mi.) | Peenemünde – Lauterbach

In the morning you will bike through Zecherin and Karlshagen Harbour to Peenemünde (tip: historical/technical museum in the former power plant). When the weather is fine you may feel like cycling the “beach-route” via Trassenheide and Zinnowitz alternatively. In Peenemünde you will get back on board and at about 6 p.m. you sail to Lauterbach in the southeast of Rügen Island (arrival around 9 p.m.).

Day 7: Lauterbach – Stralsund (48 km/30 mi.)

Today you should not miss a visit to the nearby city of Putbus (about 2 km) with its well-known circus. Classical buildings line this circular “square”, where all the streets converge. Your bike tour on this day will take you through Putbus, Garz, Groß Schoritz, the birthplace of Ernst Moritz Arndt, Poseritz and Gustow with its well-known village church over the Rügen Dam to Stralsund, where the boat will meet you. As a city with an important past, a stroll through the historic center, which is situated on an island, will take you past numerous exceptional sights.

Day 8: Disembarkation: Stralsund

After breakfast, disembarkation at 9.00 a.m. and end of your journey.

Good to know
  • Cycling route distances in the travel program are approximate.
  • Profile: car-free paths, rural country roads with little traffic and asphalted bike lanes but also on dusty field paths and dirt roads, with a few short sections on federal highways. “Pleasure-biking” – The routes are mostly flat with some hilly parts, although there will be a few steep inclines and downgrades.
  • Detailed cycling maps, route tips and a GPS app are available to cycle individually and at their own pace. The board manager is always available via cell phone in case of questions, breakdowns or emergencies.
  • If you prefer not to cycle on a particular day, you’re welcome to stay on board and relax while the ship cruises to the next landing place.
  • Excursions: We offer a small excursion program, that can be booked directly on board at the cruise director only. You will get a brief description together with your travel documents. Depending on the number of participants some excursions could be carried out in 2 languages (German/ English).
  • Schedule and program changes Basically, we reserve the right to make changes of routing and program. If there is low or high water and a route cannot be shipped, the captain reserves the right to change the route in view of your safety (this cannot be accepted as a reason for free withdrawal). Same applies to previously unknown administrative orders of lock or bridge repairs.
  • Travel documents EU-citizens (without special situations like dual citizenship, main residence abroad or a limited-validity passport) are required to have a valid passport or ID-card, not expiring within six (6) months of the return of your cruise. We kindly ask non-EU citizens, EU-nationals with multiple citizenship or anybody who has to respect special legal entry requirements for the country to visit, to inform about visa and entry documents at the competent embassy.
  • This trip is not suitable for guests with reduced mobility.

The boat Princess had awful showers. hardly any pressure and reverting from freezing cold to scolding hot ! Not what you need aftwer a good day on the bike. Food barely adequate. Seemed precooked and brought on board with sauces added with artistic presentations. Many guests agreed with this as did SE staff.

Our trip from Berlin to Stralsund was really good. The food was excellent. Not one bad meal. The service on board wonderful. However, we feel there needs to be a re-design of the route booklet we followed each day. The street names are not marked on the map itself. Instead they are on an adjacent page written out longhand, which is impossible to follow while biking. Perhaps a side by side design with map on one side and written directions with street names on the other , or street names written boldly on the map. There were many of us along the way on the path considering which way to go. Better would be downloadable bike routes via Google Maps and a spot on the handle bars for a phone. I think the paper map stuck in a pouch under plastic that has to have its pages turned in route is obsolete. No one travels anymore using a paper map. I can see having it as backup in case there is no gps service, but I would have enjoyed the trip so much more had I had a better way to know the path. Some of the paths we were on seemed very rugged and not well maintained. Also, the Princess is an older ship and the rooms have windows that don’t open, and the rooms are a bit stinky of mildew. Our room was above a tank of sorts, so we had sewage smell in our room for days in addition to the mildew smell. The staff worked to help mask it with sprays and other techniques. I won’t travel on an older ship again.

Hi Susan, Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We are extremely grateful that you took the time to send us your feedback about our Berlin Stralsund tour on board of the Princess. I read through your feedback carefully, and consider your suggestion to be very insightful. I will pass it on to our Partner SE-Tours who organized this tour to see if they could implement this change in the upcoming season. Please know that on all our tours in Holland we use a GPS application which you can use on your mobile phone. Thanks once again. Best, Romy

We did the Berlin to Stralsund trip & really enjoyed it. Boat & crew were really good. Don’t expect it to be like a ocean cruise & you’ll not be disappointed. The food was really good, we coughed up the extra for the all inclusive drinks package & thought it good value. The cycle routes were undemanding if you’re a regular cyclist & we’d have preferred a “proper” gravel bike rather than the perfectly OK “touring/town” bike supplied but that’s just a personal preference. All the crew/staff were friendly, polite & helpful. The cycle route guides were comprehensive & easy to follow, plus Rainer gave a exhaustive verbal briefing each morning if you wanted it. All in all we had a great week. Just for info: I’d class it as a holiday with cycling rather a cycling holiday.
