Indulging in a bike tour along the German and Austrian stretch of the Danube is a true pleasure — and your floating hotel will be with you the entire way! The bike paths slope gently downhill, following the river banks through gorgeous little villages and verdant Danube landscapes. Soon you’ll find yourself admiring the wondrous “Great Loop” as you make a breathtaking 180º turn on the Danube and enter the realm of Wachau, with its old-world delights including monasteries, terraced vineyards, and fairytale castles.

And then, prepare yourself for Vienna! Although we could talk about its marvelous city hall, the iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the world’s oldest Ferris wheel (the Riesenrad), you really have to see it for yourself to understand the beauty. These and many more attractions are easily explored by bike, and when you need a break, drop into one of Vienna’s world-famous coffee houses for cake, comfort and carefree relaxation. Continue the culinary and cultural adventures as you see fit — perhaps stop by at the Vienna State Opera House or taste Wiener schnitzel with local wine in the bistros of its hometown.

PLEASE NOTE: As from 2026, the Prinzessin Katharina start/ends in Engelhartszell.

Individual bicycle tour: You´ll receive a detailed roadbook with maps and information to the routing on board. You do not cycle in a group – you cycle individually in your own tempo and are therefore able to time your day to your needs. Only the schedule gives you a time frame.

The ship – Your sailing hotel

In between cycling excursions, you cruise along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You dine, sleep and eat breakfast on board. You’ll receive a packed lunch every day, and you can usually choose between a longer or shorter bike ride. It’s also possible to spend a day on board if you like. There are rental bikes on board, but you can also bring your own if you mention it when booking.

The highlights of the tour: The Three-river City Passau, the Schlögener Schlinge or Great Loop, UNESCO World Heritage Site Wachau, baroque Linz, elegant and multifaceted Vienna.

    Itinerary

Day 1 Boarding in Passau | Passau to Engelhartszell

Arrival in the “Three River City”. Passau attracts many with the world’s greatest church organ at the Stephansdom and its charming Old Town. Embarkation will be around 4:00 pm, departure around 7 pm. Enjoy your first dinner on board and an evening sail to Engelhartszell.

Day 2 Engelhartszell to “Great Loop” to Brandstatt | Brandstatt – Linz – Tull
    44km27 mi or 47km29 mi

Need a boost? Try some of the special cordials and liqueurs in the Trappist monastery in Engelhartszell. Supposedly, they have “special healing power.” Downstream, the way leads you to pretty villages amid natural landscape. For a change take the little ferry boat through the romantic Schlögener loop, where the river makes a very abrupt 180 degree turn (approx. € 7 per pers.). Shipping from Brandstatt to Linz and on to Tulln. Tip: discover Linz, the capital of upper Austria while riding on the bright yellow City-Express.

    Day 3 Tulln – Vienna-Nussdorf
    32km19 mi or 39km24 mi

Right in front of Vienna’s entrance, embedded in a breathtaking landscape, the monastery of Klosterneuburg is situated. You can already see the cupola of this 900-year-old baroque building from a distance. “Kahlenbergerdorf” with its wine taverns is definitely worth a visit. A short hike through the vineyards leads to the Kahlenberg viewing terrace, where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the vibrant metropolis below.

Day 4 Vienna-Nussdorf (day of rest)

You should be sure to see the most famous places of interest like the St. Stephens Cathedral and the Hofburg, the gorgeous boulevard “Ringstraβe” with the Burgtheater, the State Opera House or the town hall that takes you back to the past. Take your time in the afternoon to stroll or visit one of the famous Viennese coffee bars. In the night shipping to Krems in the Wachau Valley.

    Day 5 Krems – Melk
    37km22 mi

Look forward to a bike ride through one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe. The gently rolling hills of the Wachau Valley, with its picturesque villages, well-kept terraced vineyards, historic castles, monasteries, and romantic ruins, are sure to enchant you. In Dürnstein, the blue baroque tower of the abbey church greets you from afar. In Melk, the magnificent Benedictine Abbey towers above the Danube – a place full of history, culture, and impressive architecture. Enjoy this day with all your senses – it is one of the highlights of the journey.

    Day 6 Melk – Grein
    51km31 mi

This stage leads you through charming river meadows with wide vistas and small, picturesque towns. The wild Strudengau region, once feared by shipmen, is now a scenic river gorge with forested slopes and rocky shores. In the idyllic town of Grein, you’ll find Greinburg Castle towering above the Danube – the oldest residential castle in Austria, which you can explore on a guided tour.

    Day 7 Grein – Mauthausen | Mauthausen – Passau
    36km22 mi or 40km24 mi

The vast plains of the Machland region accompany you with lush fields and peaceful paths. In the Celtic Village of Mitterkirchen, you can immerse yourself in a long-forgotten era. Upon arrival in Mauthausen, a visit to the memorial site of the former concentration camp is recommended – a place of quiet remembrance and historical responsibility. In the evening, a festive farewell dinner awaits you on board. Overnight cruise to Passau.

    Day 8 Disembarkation in Passau

Every journey draws to an end. Arrival in Passau is about 10 am, disembarkation half an hour later. We kindly recommend not booking car or train travel before 12:00 p.m. to allow for possible disembarkation delays. Please also allow at least two hours of travel time from Passau to the Munich Airport.

    Good to know
    • Cycling route distances in the travel program are approximate.
    • On some days you can choose between a longer and a shorter cycling route. Please note that on the shorter routes you may not be able to visit all the highlights mentioned.
    • The tour itinerary and route are subject to possible changes due to nautical, technical or meteorological reasons, or other unforeseen events.
    • Cycle tours: The bike tours are individual, at your own pace, without a tour guide, but with daily briefings on board and detailed bicycle maps and directions. All cycle tours can be classified as being easy. When a guest does not want to cycle one day, she/he can skip the bike tour and relax on board while cruising to the next harbor.
    • Profil: Nearly all cycle tours can be classified as being easy.
    • Luggage: we recommend rain-wear, bicycle helmet, sunhat and sneakers. Please be aware that the cabin storage space is very limited
    • Smoking: the interior of the ship is a non-smoking zone: smoking is only allowed on the sun deck. As a safety measure, a statutory smoking ban applies in all cabins; this means that all cabins and rooms on board are non-smoking areas.
    • Schedule and program changes: Basically, we reserve the right to make changes of routing and program. In case of flood or low tide, the shipping company reserves the right to bridge parts of passages by buses. In extreme situations, the shipping company reserves the right to cancel the journey on short notice. No legal right shall be constituted of both situations. The same applies for officially ordered – previously not announced – repair work on locks or bridges.
    • Notes: Please be aware that a cruise ship on the Danube is not only your hotel but also a machine, working with engine power also during the night. Especially crossing locks and bridges – and the preparation work – may cause noise. If you are sensitive please bring your own ear plugs.
    • Travel documents: EU-citizens (without special situations like dual citizenship, main residence abroad or a limited-validity passport) are required to have a valid passport or ID-card, not expiring within six(6) months of the return of your cruise. We kindly ask non-EU citizens, EU-nationals with multiple citizenship or anybody who has to respect special legal entry requirements for the country to visit, to inform about visa and entry documents at the competent embassy.
    • This trip is not suitable for guests with reduced mobility.
    • We recommend that you take out a travel health insurance with repatriation coverage as well as baggage, accident and travel cancellation insurances.

Five stars for the Princess Katharina and her crew

The crew were always cheerful, friendly and helpful. The boat was very comfortable and clean. The food was excellent and the chef catered for my lactose and gluten intolerances extremely well. The river is very beautiful and our bike rides were great. Everybody had a wonderful time. Nothing not too like.

      A nice experience

The staff were incredible- our room was spacious and clean. Bikes were excellent and routes easy to follow. The food was very well presented but flavour was pedestrian. The sales push to purchase the drink add-on package was unnecessary .
